Our Mission!
The mission of the United Methodist church is to make disciples
of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The nature of this task
today is to follow the steps of Jesus as He led His disciples to take up his
cross and follow Him. While Jesus was here on this earth, He demonstrated the
nature of the church by preaching, teaching and healing. Many times in the
scripture, we see the nature of Jesus' ministry. In Acts 10:36-38, we see how
Paul tells us that Jesus went about preaching the good news and healing those
under the power of the devil. Matt. 4:23, 9:29-35 tells us that Jesus went
throughout Galilee teaching, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing
every disease and sickness. If we try to emulate Christ's walk on this earth,
then we should continue his ministry by teaching preaching and healing.
The primary tasks of the church should be the same for
individuals as it is for the corporate nature. In Matt. 28:19-20, Jesus leaves
the disciples with the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing, and teaching them everything He has commanded. We proclaim that
commission and follow it, the context of the commission may be different today
but we are to adapt. We continue to use the principles that John Wesley used to
confirm and assure the direction of Christ and His commission. We base the
nature of the church through teaching and preaching on scripture first and then
seek to enlighten by Christian tradition, enliven by experience, and examine by
reason.
Our number one Christian priority is to make disciples of Jesus
Christ. The church should exist to make disciples and the individual Christian
should exist to make disciples for the transformation of the
world.
